November Recolonization Update
The January Rush Date is firm now confirmed January 12 - January 26
Since the 1st letter went out in September informing the alumni membership of the recolonizing efforts. Much has occurred. With the work the Recolonization committee appointed by the Alumni Corporation Board we have since:
1. Brought Delta Upsilon back into the fold, after finding out DU International Officers never received the letter sent out to their local (Clarkson) consultant. Averting the need for separate insurance, lesson plans, training & education by alumni, and going through recognition with a new prospectus.
2. Developed a modified plan to push up recolonization with an Alumni Corp. sponsored DU consultant in September/October 2013 and use alumni for the reintroduction.
3. Resolved Almost all of the issues between Clarkson and DU regarding Rushing and Education. (We still can’t rush first year students until we have a C.O.R.E. score)
4. We have continuance of our Provisional Recognition for the January and September Rush in 2013.
5. Through a group of DU and Lambda Alumni put together a January Rush program for introducing DU to Campus. It has been absent for five years.
6. Introduction will include:
a. Stu Lang ’53 presentation of his project the Amazon Floating Paper Mill built in Japan and barged to Brazil
b. Potsdam Food Drive organized by Denis Jones’64
c. A Clarkson/SLU pre-game event with DU-Clarkson Rally Towels
d. A sports gear raffle with signed memorabilia and iPad grand prize. Assisted by Dave Nims
e. An attended exhibit information table about DU and Lambda with raffle tickets exchanged for student information and to develop a student rush list.
7. The complete rush process through acceptance is 2 weeks long which is a difficult task without a membership. But we feel we have compensated for that with a different approach utilizing the benefits of mentoring, business day seminars, and some small scholarships that we hope will grow behind Alumni support. Our approach is to make the chapter a center for learning, service and leadership development. We’ll leave it to the members figure out the social aspects with our mentoring.
8. Basic fraternity education is through the DU Colony Manual found on the Website.
9. Developed an alumni mentoring system to both assist the membership and provide oversight to the board.
10. Brother Denis Jones has developed an agenda for an organized Business Day to use our successful brothers to impart their valued experiences to the brotherhood.
11. Started to expanded our email address contact database up through 2010
12. Lastly, the MOU is being reviewed Frank Parks for submittal to Clarkson.
We can still use some more volunteers. Remember that Jan 19th is the St Lawrence game. Tickets are getting scarce. We are well represented up to the 70s and from the 90s to the 2000s; we’d like to have more guys from the 70s and 80s. We realize it isn’t easy with job and family commitments but just 2 days would help bridge the age gap and provide much needed help. Two or three guys from each decade is all we need to show the continuum. And we are always on the lookout for for more retirees who are the backbone of this effort. How ‘bout a few Canadians coming down to support Denis and Stu? We’ll even include Howell in that , right Al? Brown and Yale Jan. 11th & 12th and SLU on the 19th.
A More Detailed Explanation of The Recolonization Plan is:
Essentially that we have a alumni board that has added some older retired members who have more flexibility to work on communicating during normal business hours. To conduct recolonization, a committee was formed reporting to the board, to work on the details of recolonizing. As such the committee needs to be able to work with both the school and the DU Fraternity direct. All final agreements will be board approved and submitted by the board. Specifically the Recolonization Committee members are: James Conway ’83, Don Dangremond ’72, Stub Esty ’64,Dale Kenyon ’62, Dick Kenyon ’54, Dave Mazo ’56, Frank Parks ’58, Dave Rossi ’62, Chuck Trowbridge ’62, Ell Vines ’65, Jim Wood ‘64, and Paul Zolin ’59. Not all are engaged daily. Most of the recolonization detail work is being done by Jones, Trowbridge and Zolin with assists in specific areas from the others.
DU colony recolonization plan as described occurs in 3 phases:
Phase one: (Jan12-26) Re-introduce DU/Lambda Iota Chapter to the students through January rushing events and an information table. We will look for potential pledges for the Fall ’13 rush. We will interview and obtain opinions of what are the most important features to have in a fraternity house. We want to know what today’s Clarkson student want out of their Clarkson experience and what role we can play in it. We also want to look for older Veterans and transfer students who can add a mature stability to an organization. We want to make a difference and provide a fraternal experience that will make a difference both now and later in the lives of Clarkson students..
Phase two: (March - August) Committee to work specifically on the Fall recruiting with DU International consultant and staff. Develop a more complete list of potential members. Prepare for events and personnel for Fall rush that will utilize a DU Consultant. Put a council of Mentors together for the new Fall rush officers. One mentor and a backup to be assigned to each of 7 V.P.s and the president and possibly an ombudsman.
Phase three: (Starting August 31 - January 2014) Fall Rush for upperclassmen. Team building followed by elections of officers. All VP will have mentors to advise and provide board oversight by VP function. Colony training by DU Colony Manual and consultant. Set up goals, projects, plans and controls to meet objectives with retreat format. Functioning with weekly meetings. Plan and prepare for the Next January Rush.
