Our House’s exterior now looks fantastic, thanks to our now completed landscaping project. Special thanks to everyone that made this possible!

A Letter from the Chapter President for the Board and Membership

Sept 17. 2016

Hello Brothers,

I just wanted to update everyone on the current progress the chapter has made this semester. Rush went very well and we have 5 young men currently pledging and completing the new member education program, largely guided by IHQ. We have added much needed diversity to the fraternity with these new members (not all engineers). We will go in much greater detail in our alumni news letter this fall. More importantly, we have a great number of freshmen interested which will make a profound impact on our spring recruitment effort. Ryan Snow, our VP of recruitment, and Mike Palombo, the head of the recruitment committee are largely to thank for their efforts organizing very successful recruitment events gaining us much exposure this fall.

All is going well at the house. We are keeping the plants alive and many brothers have been inspired to work on projects to better the house in their spare time. Of course there is the never ending task of learning how to live with one another which we are accomplishing as well as one could reasonably expect.

I know it has been a while since the last Alumni Board Meeting. I know with the new housing situation the Alumni Board isn't as involved in the day to day aspects but I still feel that it would be beneficial to meet regularly. This might be once a month or maybe once or twice a semester.

I am also aware that IHQ informs the alumni when bills are due. What they fail to mention though is that Jonah Allen our treasurer is very on top of things. More often than not when IHQ sends us an invoice, he has already paid it and that their records are not up to date. Jonah has had to prove several times in the past that we have already paid a bill so that we are not charged twice. There are matters like this lack of organization from IHQ that I want Alumni aware of. This way alumni are not under the impression that we are being negligent as a chapter.

Fraternally,

Travis Decker

Back by popular demand, The Hoot! Historically, The Hoot was a semesterly update from the chapter for all things Lambda/DU. So now, we're continuing an old tradition to keep everyone up to date!

Flooding Around the House Has Been Addressed

I am happy to report we have been notified that the problem of front yard flooding has been addressed.  CU with assistance and recommendations from our Clarkson trained landscaper has installed a new culvert and natural drainage to divert accumulated water to the street area.  Our Landscaper brought in a transit and found the natural drainage path and the university placed a culvert under the sidewalk that leads to the front of the DU house.

On a separate note the source of the basement drain back up has been found.  The DU house and the former Sig house (now Outdoor Club) main drains combine before running to the street main and was plugged with large quantities of toilet paper among other obstructions.  The DU house being at the lower elevation got the brunt of the backup.  Both houses received instruction on preventing the problem.

A Celebration of 80 Years

A group of alumni gathered in Hilton Head to celebrate the milestone. The 3 day event included Lunch and Dinner at some of the finest culinary establishments in the area, many cocktail hours (some longer), and a trip to the Marine Museum on Parris Island to commemorate 9/11. Special thanks go to the Gibbs, the Barrett’s and Ben Kemper for hosting it on short notice. Dave Nelson’68 also joined in the festivities. Kenny collapsed after “Kiddie” Boot Camp (below) but naturally recovered in time for cocktails and cake.

New Table for the LambdaDU House

We would be remiss if we overlooked the recent Team Project by several of the brothers making good use of the work shop.  Note how it’s shaped for the front porch.

Tom Nims Induction

Brother Dave Nims Class of 59 sent the following information regarding his son, Tom, who will be installed Posthumously into the U S Lacrosse (Upstate NY Chapter) Hall of Fame along with 5 other members of the 1984 Central Empire State Games Team on October 23 in East Syracuse. Tom was also an All American Goalie with Syracuse University”s 1st NCAA National Championship Team. Tom’s Son, Kenny, will speak for his father at the event. Kenny was also All American LAX at Syracuse and tournament MVP for the 2009 National Championship team.

A Photo From the Past Has Surfaced

You may recognize the captain of the NYMA baseball team as the president of the United States but look at the fellow standing on the right. It is none other than our Mike McCann ’60 who taught and coached baseball at the NYMA. A tribute to Clarkson Canadian Hockey Players, Mike not only scouted for the Montreal Canadians in Ontario but could work with a baseball cap, too.

2017 FL Gathering at The Plantation on Crystal River

The gathering was attended by mostly Lambdas from 1957 - 1961. All who had been there in 2011 agreed that the facility was beautifully renovated by the new management into a first class resort. That was further punctuated by sold out capacity.

A visit to Weeki Wachee to see the mermaids perform their acrobatic swimming enabled Kenny Gibbs to catch one off guard for a pose. Same old Kenny!

And speaking of women, How about those Clarkson Women winning the NCAA again. We were able to see and celebrate the event on a big screen at a local sports bar.

Wrapping up the final day a fearsome foursome took to the local firing range for some target shooting with a newly purchased Marlin Camp 9, that was manufactured in 1985 under the watchful eye of then CEO of Marlin Firearms, Frank Kenna, a Lambda from the class of 1950.
